The Challenge
Burton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were operating without a cath lab service on site. Patients who required angiography or angioplasty had to attend the Glenfield Hospital in Leicester. The Trust carry out their own implantable pacemakers but complex devices also had to go to Glenfield.
The Trust wanted to provide their own cardiac catheterisation service for the local population rather than having to send their patients to a tertiary hospital. A new unit would have to integrate into the existing design and layout of the hospital and ideally have 2 separate buildings – a Cardiac Cath Lab and a Chest Pain unit sitting within the cardiac ward to provide new facilities for outpatient cardiac investigations and then invasive diagnostic and treatment procedures in close proximity.
The Results
